The classic Cuban Sandwich is a hearty combination of savory delights like layers of sliced swiss cheese, ham sandwich meat, and slow cooked pork loin then we add dill pickles and plenty of yellow mustard onto the toasted hoagie bun!  HEAVEN. It’s just plain heaven!

Cuban Sandwich Recipe

I made one of these Cuban Sandwiches for Madeliene’s husband, Spencer, a few weeks ago and he was speech-less! Mainly because his mouth was too busy enjoying the Cuban to chat much about anything. He’s a lover of good food and this sandwich hit his “Top 5” sandwiches list! That’s quite an honor because he doesn’t mess around when it comes to his sandwiches! The Blueberry Apple Coleslaw Recipe you see is in the background of the photo’s is simple to make and quite a marvelous match as a side dish for a Cuban Sandwich! Then add some crinkle potato chips with a shot of bourbon and we are right back in 1831 when the cuban sandwich was created. 

A glance at the history of the Cuban Sandwich 

A Cuban sandwich is a variation of a ham and cheese sandwich that originated among the Cuban workers in the cigar factories in Key West, Florida as early as 1831. Later in 1886, Cuban exiles and expatriates brought it to Ybor City, Tampa. The sandwich was later popularized in Miami in the 1940s.  Some believe that the sandwich was a common lunch food for workers in both the cigar factories and sugar mills of Cuba (especially in big cities such as Havana or Santiago de Cuba) and the cigar factories of Key West by the 1860s. Cuban Sandwich Recipe

Cuban Sandwich Recipe has an amazing "wow" factor- you simply won't believe how amazing this sandwich is! 

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 hoagie rolls
  • 4 dill pickles slices
  • 6 slices organic roasted pork loin or shoulder
  • 6 slices ham
  • 6 slices swiss cheese
  • 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Coat large skillet with cooking spray and preheat on medium high heat.
  2. Lightly coat each half of hoagie bun with butter and cook for 2-3 minutes until evenly toasted; remove from heat.
  3. Place bun on serving plate; spread mustard on each side of bun and layer pickle, cheese, ham, pork loin, pickle, and top of bun.
  4. Repeat with additional sandwich and serve!
  5. Enjoy our Cuban Sandwich Recipe with potato chips and coleslaw!
