Why I love Classic Belgian Waffles Recipe
I simply adore today’s Classic Belgian Waffles, I mean who doesn’t! Lighter waffles batter that’s cooked up with crispy edges. What’s the difference between a Belgian waffle and a regular waffle? It’s the larger size and lighter batter that forms the deeper pockets in these eggy waffles.
Also, good to note that the The Belgian waffle is popular in North America and didn’t originate in Belgium. The waffles are often made with yeast, however, contemporary waffles are often made with baking powder, as with this recipe.
The Belgian waffle was introduced in the U.S. by Maurice Vermersch who was from Brussels, Belgium. The waffle was originally named Bel-Gem Waffles, but he later changed the name to Belgian.

Ingredients in Classic Belgian Waffles Recipe
- All–purpose flour- is a general use white flour. It is not a whole flour, and only the starchy endosperm is used, without the germ and bran portion of the kernel. It is a blend of hard and soft flours or hard flours with a protein content (gluten) of about 9 to 12 percent.
- Egg whites- are a fantastic source of pure, low-calorie protein. A single large egg white provides about 3.6 grams of complete protein while containing zero fat, zero cholesterol, and only around 18 calories.
- Milk- It’s packed with important nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, B vitamins, potassium and vitamin D. Plus, it’s an excellent source of protein. Drinking milk and dairy products may prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures and even help you maintain a healthy weight.
- Vegetable oils- offer key nutritional and practical benefits when used in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
- Vanilla extract- provides antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and calming sensory benefits thanks to its active compound, vanillin. Contains vanillin, which helps neutralize cell-damaging free radicals. Enhances perceived sweetness in foods and drinks, allowing you to use less sugar. The scent provides a soothing effect on the nervous system, helping lower stress and ease startle reflexes.
- Sea Salt- is mostly composed of sodium chloride, a compound that helps regulate fluid balance and blood pressure in the body. Since it’s minimally processed, it contains some minerals, including potassium, iron, and calcium.

How to make Classic Belgian Waffles Recipe
-
- In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Separate the eggs from the egg yolks. Set the egg whites aside.
- Add the egg yolks, milk, oil and vanilla to the dry ingredients. With an electric beater on medium speed, beat together the ingredients for about 2 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites on high speed until light, fluffy, and stiff. Gently fold the egg whites into the batter with a spoon. Do not beat the batter or overmix it..
- Preheat the waffle iron. Brush with oil or cooking spray and spoon about 1/2 cup or more into the center of the iron; just enough to cover the waffle grid. Close the lid and bake until it stops steaming and the waffle is golden brown (about 2-3 minutes). Serve immediately.
Top your waffles with whipped cream, powdered sugar, fruit, syrup and/or butter.
