Fit Friday with Nichole

The sun is shining and the weather is gorgeous. During this time of year the trails start calling my name early in the morning. I hope that you can hear those trails calling for you too. For some that can be a bit daunting if the trails aren’t familiar. So this week I am talking trail running for beginners.

Some important side notes, you don’t have to run the WHOLE time to call it trail running. Walk/hike the uphills! I promise it isn’t cheating and you can still feel accomplished at the end.

Yes, there are some crazy trail runners out there that can go for miles. There are some that seek out the ultras and run through the dark. There  are others that keep their eyes on the peaks and bag a a new one each week. And yes, there are some that go out and find a trail along the benches and to enjoy an easy three miles.

All of these people are trail runners, don’t feel like you aren’t just because you don’t go to the extreme.

Even if you are keeping it simple I would recommend looking into good trail shoes first and foremost. They make the trail so much more enjoyable.

Trail shoes; Trail shoes are designed to grip softer surfaces than road shoes, which is especially important when trail running in the rain. Manufacturers often use a stickier rubber for the outsole. Since this rubber is softer than the blown rubber used for road runners, it’s vulnerable to abrasion on the pavement.

Trail runners won’t hold up as long if you wear them on the road. On the other hand, road runners don’t provide enough traction in rough terrain. But trail running shoes often have deep, wide lugs that give them better grip on multiple surfaces.

Healthy Cooking Tips:

The main rule of thumb for healthy cooking is to avoid cooking methods that require excessive fat. Remember to eat a plentiful variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and drink enough water too.

I incorporate healthy cooking techniques by using healthy oils, in moderate amounts, in all of my cooking… I call it “health-i-fying” recipes!

  • Baking: dry heat, below 400 degrees for meat and fish, roasts, and vegetables.
  • Braising: browning the ingredients first and then covering with broth or water and slowly cooking.
  • Poaching: gently simmer ingredients in water or broth, using minimal amounts of liquid.
  • Steaming: quickly cooking foods above a small amount of water, allows food to retain most of the nutrients. AND when you smell it, it’s done!
  • Broiling: uses intense, direct heat. Broiling can be done under the broiler in an oven, or over the coals of a BBQ grill. High temperatures browns and crisps the outside while sealing in the juices.
  • Grilling: use leaner cuts and marinade meat to reduce to the HA formation which may cause colon cancer. Gas grills are better than charcoal for reducing HA.
  • Sauteing: quickly cooks relatively small or thin pieces of food.
  • Roasting: like baking, but at higher temperatures- using a rack underneath meat so excess fat can drip below.
  • Stir-frying: quickly cooks small pieces of food while rapidly stirring in a small amount of oil that’s almost to the smoking point.
