How our garden grows #14

It’s pretty much a jungle out there… this garden of ours!

We’re well into the harvesting stage of our garden- we’ve enjoyed 3 different onions, carrots, spinach, chard, 6 varieties of lettuce, beets, turnips, radishes, red potatoes, purple potatoes, zucchini, yellow squash, peppers, corn, cantaloupe, eggplant, canary melons, banana squash, 3 different green beans, 2 different cucumbers, butternut squash, herbs, tomatillos and tomatoes (although they’re late this year), and on and on!  YUM!

We showed how to trellis vegetables and some melons earlier in the spring and this is what our cantaloupe trellis looks like NOW and the next photo is of some cantaloupe just hanging there getting nice and ripe… we’ll harvest at least 40 cantaloupes this year! WOW!!  Good thing we like to make a lot of smoothies AND cantaloupe freezes well!

My new favorite garden treat are these yummy little tiny things… you can be sure a yummy recipe is on it’s way with these little babies in it!!

Pineapple Tomatillos!! New garden favorite 🙂

The trick to Pineapple Tomatillos is to eat them when they’re really ripe, as in, fallen to the ground all by themselves!  It’s OK because they have their own little pod that protects them!  In order to eat them you have to peel back the shell and eat the little orange ball inside!  It tastes like a little pineapple grape to me 🙂

Peel back the pod and eat the little yellow fruit inside!

Here’s a few pictures of some of our produce in it’s growing action…

If ya like egg plant, we’ve got a million and I’d gladly give you as much of it as you’d like 🙂  What are you’re favorite egg plant recipes??  I’m going to have to figure some out pretty quick here!

Egg plants… ready to share!

We have several varieties of heirloom tomatoes this year!  This a picture of Golden Queen- totally ripe and ready to eat when a rich yellow color, behind it you can see an unripe cluster of Mr. Stripeys!  They’re delicious too… makes watering all those heirloom tomato seedlings back in March worth it 🙂

We have run into one little problem this year that is a bit heavier than we normally get it… because our humidity levels have been a lot higher around this neck of the woods than usual, it’s called Powdery Mildew and it gets on the leaves of melons, cucumbers, and especially winter and summer squash- the zucchini and yellow squash in our garden…

It will kill the plant and so you want to treat it as soon as you suspect that’s what your dealing with… particularly the new leaves as the plants put them out we use Copper Soap Shield from Garden’s Alive to treat this problem!  We aren’t sure if we caught our summer squash plants in time to save all of them?? (And we still have to fight the Squash Bugs)

There will be lots more garden recipes coming your way… I love this time of year when we get to take advantage of this amazing fresh produce (AND all our friends and family too)!!

Thanks for having a little look at How our garden grows with us today!  If your not able to grow a garden be sure to take advantage of the local farmer’s markets… there’s always lots of yummy stuff to be found there!

Have a wonderful day!!

Love,

Ruthie
