Now, Aleisha from She Calls me Mama Leisha is sharing her top 3 reads from 2013 with us today…

I’m excited to see what she has to share!   Reading is fun but it’s even better when a book comes highly recommended 🙂

I am a bookworm!

I have always been a lover of books.  As a child, I would hide a flashlight and a book under my pillow at night.  Once my mom had kissed me good night and shut my bedroom door, I’d click my flashlight on and read, “Ramona Quimby, Age 8,” while nestled under my Rainbrow Brite covers.  It was magical and thrilling.

I learned to love Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume beneath the bedtime stars.

You can still find my nose in a book!  I have shelving units heavily ladden with books.  I have books stacked on dressers and night stands.  They are hiding in corners, under beds, and in closets.  I love to read and frequently joke that I hope the Lord lets me live a long, long life….so I can read all the titles I have on my long, long book list.

I read a number of stupendous books in 2013, but have chosen to highlight three of my favorites for you.  Looking for something to read?  Give these titles a whirl:

Same Kind of Different As Me, by Ron Hall and Denver Moore.  Quote from the book:  “Sometimes to touch us, God touches someone that is close to us.”

Beautifully inspiring and wonderfully told, this is the story of a wealthy, white art dealer and a homeless African American man.  Ron, a Texan with money as vast as the prairie, volunteers with his wife at a homeless shelter in the Dallas area.  While serving meals in the soup kitchen, Ron meets Denver.  Denver is friendless, penniless, and homeless, and has seen more heartache than one can imagine.  Ron and Denver eventually forge a breathtaking friendship that will touch your heart.  Read this one with a box of tissues!

Replay, by Sharon Creech.  Quote from the book:  “Leo’s papa stood in the doorway, gazing down at him, ‘Leo, you make gold from pebbles,’ and the way he said it, Leo could tell that this was a good thing…”

For young readers (and older readers too), this one is fantastic!  You can’t go wrong with Sharon Creech.  I like most of what she has written; she’s doing brilliant things in the world of children’s literature.  Replay is about a boy named Leo who longs to be a Broadway star.  His family is big and noisy, and they have their share of problems.  But in the midst of all the chaos, Leo fights to discover who he is, and who he can become!

Freak The Mighty, by Rodman Philbrick.  Quote from the book, “Everything seems really great, just like Gwen says, expect when I lie down on my bed it hits me, boom, and I’m crying like a baby.  And the really weird thing is, I’m happy.”

This book was my biggest “surprise read” this year.  I picked it up not knowing much about it; leery as to the content and not expecting a lot.  HOLY COW!  It is awesome!  “Freak” and “Mighty” are too unlikely friends who form a deep, meaningful bond.  They come to rely on each other and take care of each other.  Freak The Mighty is well-written, funny, suspenseful, and emotional.  What a treasure!

What did you read in 2013?  What will you read in 2014?  I hope you will pick these titles up and give them a try.  (Email me at leishmcd@gmail.com and let me know what you think!  We’ll “talk books!”)

Happy Reading, my Friends!

Thank you so much to Aliesha for sharing Mama Leishas Top 3 Must Reads…

I love to read but it seems lately all I have time for is my Culinary text books 🙂  One day I will get back to reading about something other than food.  Having good recommendations is always nice to tuck away however 🙂

Happy Thursday!

xoxo~ Aleisha and Ruthie
