DIY Stenciled Dish

I’m so excited for you to see what Dru of Polkadot Poplars has brought with her today!

DIY Stenciled Dish and is an adorable project for the perfect personalized gift!

Are you like me and have mixed feelings about the holiday season coming up? I love the holidays, but it’s always so much work. I am still trying to learn how to get everything done earlier, but there’s always those last minute things you have to do. So, I’ve been thinking about some gift ideas for neighbors and friends and think I’ve come up with a good idea…..personalizing and stenciling plates and mugs.

I’ve found some nice, heavy dishes at the Dollar Store (I love a good deal!). They will be perfect for my farmhouse style loving friends. I grabbed some stencils on sale at Hobby Lobby and some of this paint.

  • Enamel paint
  • Makeup sponge
  • Tape
  • Paper plate and paper towels
  • Oven

Stenciled Dish Instructions

  • Measure your plate and mug to find the middle.
  • Center your stencils and adhere the edges with tape. (You may need to hold down areas of the stencil with your fingers.)
  • Dip your sponge into the paint and dab some off on the paper towels.
  • Lightly tap, tap, tap the sponge over the stencil. (Do not brush the sponge back and forth.)

  • Let the paint dry. (Enamel paint is thicker than acrylic paint so you shouldn’t need two coats. If it looks light in places go over the stencil again.)
  • Air dry the dishes for at least four hours.
  • Place dishes on a cooking sheet into a preheated 325 degree oven for 30 minutes. This cures the paint and makes it permanent. They are now dishwasher safe and ready to eat on.

That’s it. Can you just imagine the possibilities and the different ways you can personalize these gifts? How about filling the mug with a dry soup mix or hot chocolate or add a nice plate stand to the plate to display it with.

If you all have ways to simplify your holidays I’d love to hear. Please let me know in the comments below.
